Our Blog

Welcome to our little piece of heaven. Tucked at the end of a private road on the east side of town, few will know your back there. Sitting on a hill next to Carpenters Creek, the sound of falling water soothes your senses. Enjoy your favorite beverage around the campfire, or use the grill to prepare a great meal you can enjoy on the decks Yooper picnic table. You can even hike up the creek to discover two wonderful waterfalls. The choices you’ll have are endless.
Located at the eastern end of the Pictured Rock’s National Lakeshore on Lake Superior, the town of Grand Marais is a gem of the upper peninsula. Famous for its history, beaches, fishing, rockhounding (agates-yooperlites-fossils), hiking trails, and friendly atmosphere, you will never be the same once you visit. The call of the big lake Gitche Gumee will leave you melancholy as you pull out of town. Everyone who visits returns. Come join us. The air, water, and endless nature are something everyone should experience.

My wife and I first came here around 35 years ago. We are rockhounds who enjoy the the excitement of hunting the semi-precious Lake Superior Agate. The rock strewn beaches found here are famous for the wide variety of rocks deposited here by glaciers grinding across ancient pre-Cambrian shield to our north. If you and yours enjoy pretty rocks, this is the place to be. Bring a bucket or two. The hobby is quite addicting. We have Dish Network, but your unlikely to watch much TV. We have a binder with piles of flyers from places to visit within an hours drive. The U.P. has so much to offer that most of our guests book a full week. At $575.00 for 7 nights we are by far the least expensive home for rent in town. We do offer 3 night weekends for $350.00 or occasionally, (when available) single nights for $125.00.This season will be our 8th, and it is likely that, (like last year) almost 90% of our guests will be regulars returning for their annual dose of Grand Marais. So do not hesitate. Go to the booking calendar and reserve your stay. We fill up quickly. We rent from May 1st until the end of October. If you have difficulties with booking, or just questions please call me, Jerry Phillips at 616-970-6525. If the week you want is not available please ask about the second property we are developing. It is a great deal, I think you will like it.

Thanks in advance for your interest and patronage.

Grand Marais Bay

A safe harbor from the storms of Lake Superior. The Sandy beach and bay are a popular place to get some sun and enjoy a brisk dip into the big lake Gitchee Gumee. Be careful it’s chilly

Lake Superior

Rockhounding in the Spring along the shore line.

Sunsets in Grand Marais

While visiting it is a must do to catch one or more of our gorgeous sunsets. Just drive to the cul de sac at the “Front Porch “ deck and enjoy! Jill and I recommend a glass of wine. Highway 77N runs into it.

Carpenter Falls

If your up to it, we highly recommend a hike upstream to our two amazing waterfalls. The largest is about 200 yards upstream following the path behind the no dumping sign southwest of where you park.  We recommend water shoes and a walking stick. The water is usually shallow. If I am around, I love to guide people. We do expect our guests to christen themselves. This is one of our great secrets

Shea Falls

On your way to Shea Falls is a beautiful falls named for our only grand-daughter Sevi.    I recommend you set in it on a hot day. Rocky and I love to hike the falls. Be careful and enjoy. Take only pictures and leave only footprints.
